Proposed Green Fee

Grocery Bag Fee Update
  • • The proposed 20-cent per bag Green Fee will not take effect January 1, 2009, as proposed by Mayor Nickels and the Seattle City Council.

  • • The Council passed the Green Fee into law on July 28, 2008. However, sufficient signatures have been gathered by opponents for a referendum to place the issue on the ballot for a vote, most likely as part of the primary election in August, 2009.

  • • As a result, SPU will not implement the green fee in January.

  • • SPU continues to encourage customers to reduce waste and make the right choice for the environment by taking reusable bags with them when they go shopping.
