One of the signature programs operating out of the Way to Go, Seattle umbrella are the "One-Less-Car" Demonstration Projects where approximately two dozen households in Seattle agree to park one of their cars for six weeks and keep a diary of how they were able to get around during that time. To go directly to the results, click here.

These studies have been conducted twice so far- once in Fall 2000 and once in Spring 2001 - with a third round planned for Fall 2002. The information gathered is invaluable in helping us understand how Seattleites make choices about transportation, and juggle the different factors of mobility, cost, convenience, and quality-of-life.

In addition to learning about transportation choices households make, the information and case studies produced will be useful in guiding a public education effort promoting the doability and advantages of using one-less-car by making smart transportation choices. The information collected will also be used to create a package for other cities that can help them start their own Way to Go Demonstration Study. E-mail us at waytogo@seattle.gov to sign up to receive notification when this package becomes available in mid-2003.

During the "One-Less-Car" projects, participants are encouraged to think about their transportation decisions and try riding the bus, car sharing, bicycling, walking and occasional use of taxis. We want to know if families can achieve the mobility they desire at a lower cost than owning and operating second or third (or even a first) car.

Participating families sign a contract to not use their "extra" car during the Demonstration, keep a diary of their transit behavior and choices, and help us determine both the barriers and incentives to car trip reduction. Our goal is to ease neighborhood traffic and automobile-caused air pollution.
