One Less Car Challenge! Program Steps & Sign Up

Here’s a little more info about how the Challenge works, so you know what to expect and what we’ll be asking for from you.

Level 1 – Trial Separation From Your Car!
In Level 1 you give up driving one of your vehicles, or your only vehicle, for one month. Think of it as a test drive for going all the way and selling your car. You can participate in Level 1 once.

We'll guide you through this process, but here's how Level 1 works:

  • The first step is to sign up for the Challenge on this website. You can sign up no later than the 23rd of the month for the upcoming month.
  • As part of the online application process you confirm your eligibility and submit a Before Travel Survey showing your travel habits before parking your vehicle for a month. By the way, we respect your privacy and won't be asking for a lot of personal info, but the application will gather basic info about the number of cars and drivers in your household.
  • You provide an odometer reading and some other basic info about the car you choose not to drive at the beginning of your month.
  • At the end of your month, you submit an After Travel Survey showing how your travel habits shifted while not driving the car.
  • You get the incentives, and enjoy knowing you did something for our community and the planet!
  • After participating in Level 1 you might just decide you don’t need that car after all. If so, we hope you’ll sign up and participate in Level 2.
  • Even if you don’t move to Level 2, you’ll probably find yourself driving less because of your experience with the program.

Level 2 – Break Up With Your Car! it doesn't have to be 4 EVA!
In Level 2, you sell or donate one of your vehicles, or your only vehicle, and commit to not replacing it for one year. We know this is a big decision so we're here to support you along the way! You can participate in Level 2 once.

We’ll guide you through this process, but here's how Level 2 works:

  • The first step is to sign up for the Challenge on this website. It's OK to sign up after selling or donating the vehicle if it hasn’t been more than two months since you got rid of it. If it’s been two months or more, you aren't eligible for the Challenge.
  • As part of the online application process, you confirm your eligibility and submit a Before Travel Survey showing your travel habits before selling the vehicle. By the way, we respect your privacy and won’t be asking for a lot of personal info, but the application will gather basic info about the number of cars and drivers in your household.
  • You sell or donate your vehicle within three months after signing up (if you had not already sold or donated the vehicle before signing up). Then, you sign and return our easy Level 2 Contract with proof of sale or donation within one month of selling or donating the vehicle.
  • If you sold or donated your vehicle before signing up, we need to receive the Level 2 contract within one month of when you applied online.
  • We review the Level 2 Contract and contact you with final confirmation of your eligibility. At the same time we’ll inform you how the incentives will work.
  • Part way through the year, you submit an After Travel Survey showing how your travel habits shifted since you got rid of the vehicle.
  • You enjoy knowing you did something for our community and the planet!
