Councilmember Jan Drago has been a member of the Seattle City Council since January, 1994, following her election in November, 1993. Prior to her election, she had been a small business owner (Haagen Dazs Ice Cream Shoppes franchise owner, 1980-1991) and a school teacher (1973-1978). She is a graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University (B.A., Psychology). She and her husband Noel are the parents of four sons and two grandsons.
She is the new chair of the Finance, Budget and Economic Development Committee; vice chair of the Public Safety and Technology Committee; and member of the Water Resources, Solid Waste and Public Health Committee. She also chairs Labor Relations Policy Committee and is a member of the Seattle Fire Fighters Pension Board. In addition, she is a member of the Council’s WTO Accountability Review Panel.
Councilmember Drago represents the Council on the following external committees -
Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Boards, Puget Sound Regional Council Operations Committee,
The Trade Development Alliance, the Sports and Events Council, the Seattle-Kobe Sister Cities and is City Council liaison to the Seattle-Sihanoukville and Seattle-Haiphong Sister City Associations.
Councilmember Drago is a board member of the Variety Club of the Pacific Northwest, the Mountains to Sound Greenway, Institute for Motivating Reading, and a present or past member of the Women's Political Caucus, Washington State Democratic Party, Downtown Seattle Association, Denny Regrade Crime Prevention Council (former president), Washington Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Denny Regrade Community Council. She is past chairperson of the Mayor's Homeless Task Force and past vice-chair of the Governor's Task Force on Homelessness.
She is a recipient of the Seattle "First Citizen" Award (1989), St. Mathew Award from EMM/Northwest Harvest (1989), Neighborhood Partnership Award (1990) and City of Seattle Mayor's Small Business Award (1990).
